Rovers are pleased to announce, ahead of our crucial promotion battle at Brentford, that talismanic captain Rob Jones has agreed a new contract with the club to stay as Player Coach until 2015.
Rob has been instrumental in leading Rovers in their battle for promotion back to the Championship after joining from Sheffield Wednesday in the summer. A firm fans favourite and born leader Rob will continue his role as player coach that he took on after Dean Saunders left the club. He will lead the team out at a full Griffin Park for what some pundits have said is the most important game in Europe this weekend.
Rob Jones “I’m delighted, it’s been a good season for me both on the field and off. I felt at home as soon as I came here and when the talks started in January about extending my deal I was very forthcoming in my desire to stay. I was happy with the process and glad that it has been done so I can go away in summer knowing I am secure for the next two years.”
Robs role will develop now off the field as player coach which he describes was a big influence on his desire to stay at the club.
“The chance I have been given had an influence as I have made it known that coaching and managing is where I want to move towards when my playing career ends eventually. I would like to thank the owners for giving me the chance to take up this dual role at the club. The experience I have gained since January has been invaluable to me and cemented what I want to do in the future.
"The decision was easy for me and was made quickly, I have enjoyed the extra responsibility but also I am at a good football club with a good group of players who can move this club forward.
"I don’t like to work with people I don’t like and there is not a single player here who I don’t get along with. This club is full of players who want to do well and want to influence the team they are playing in which they have showed all season. Getting the chance to work longer with them and with the club for a longer period is just fantastic”
