Dickov Pleased With Cup Progression

7 August 2013

Manager Paul Dickov told Rovers Player that he was happy that his side were in the hat for the second round of the Capital One Cup after overcoming a tough Rochdale side.

Keith Hill’s Dale showed resilience in keeping Rovers at bay for 89 minutes of the tie, before Bongani Khumalo rose highest as extra time was looming to give Paul his first competitive victory as Rovers manager.

After the game Paul spoke of his delight at having gained that first victory and progressing into the next round.

“It’s a little bit of a relief getting the first win out of the way,” he said.

“I’m really pleased to get a clean sheet and to be in the hat for the next round.

“In any cup competition, at the end of the game, you want to be in the hat for the next round.”

“We’ve got to give Rochdale a lot of credit; they came here and played some good football.

“I said to the players that when we are good in games we look very good, and when we are poor sometimes we look very poor.

“We started both halves well by moving the ball quickly, getting balls into the box and causing them lots of problems.  After the 20 minute mark of each half they tended to take their foot off the gas a little bit.

“Standards-wise we need to keep that going throughout the game, regardless of who you are up against – teams will cause you problems if you don’t do that.

“I’m very critical whether we win, lose or draw, but we got the clean sheet and we’re in the hat for the next round, which is the main thing.”
