Spurr’s Rovers Alliance

22 August 2013

Although he may no longer be at the club, Tommy Spurr has shown his support for the club’s Rovers Alliance Scheme.

Former fans favourite Tommy Spurr showed why he was loved by many a Rovers fan after signing up the club scheme which helps bring young footballers through the ranks and into the first team.

As a parting gift before leaving for Blackburn Rovers, Tommy signed up to a full years membership to the scheme, which helps fund the Rovers Academy and Youth Team.

During his two-year stay in Doncaster Tommy has witnessed first hand the progression of young footballers through the club’s academy right through to the first team.

Having progressed through the Academy at Sheffield Wednesday himself, Tommy is all aware of the difficulties that young players have in trying to break through into the professional game and is eager to help those coming through at Rovers.

One player that has come to prominence during the past couple of seasons is James Husband after progressing through the Rovers Youth system. James is someone Tommy has worked very closely with and mentored to a stage that he has now taken over from him in the Rovers first team.

Tommy recognised that without the funding of the Rovers Alliance, players like Husband wouldn’t get their chance in professional football and even though he was no longer at the club he want to help.

Upon joining the Rovers Alliance Tommy said: “The youth academies are an important part of any professional football club. Every club wants to bring their own players through from a very young age into the first team. What the Rovers Alliance does is allow the club to do that by helping with the funding of the academy and youth team.

“As a player that has been trough the system I know how difficult it can be to get from being a young lad with a dream to play professional football to actually doing it and that’s the reason why I wanted to be a part of this fantastic scheme.

“Seeing the progression of some of the younger players at Doncaster over the past couple of years has been brilliant and to be able to help them to progress further is fantastic.

“James Husband is the perfect example of how dreams can turn into reality.

“Hubby started in youth teams and is now a first team regular in the Championship. I enjoyed working with Hubby, I tried to help him out as much as possible which he made really easy because he’s a top player who always wants to learn.”
