Dickov gave the official club website an update on Richie Wellens' injury and contract talks.
Paul said; “Richie won't fully train until Friday and we are hopeful he will be available on Saturday. We took him off at half time against Birmingham as Richie said he felt his back, hip and upper leg stiffen in the first half. We decided that with games coming up thick and fast, to take no risks and it was probably why we did not pass the ball as well in the first half, Richie is integral to the way we play and he was carrying his injury. Fortunately it was not a pull or strain, it was just general stiffness from travelling and the sheer amount of games we have just had.
“We will be sitting down with Richie over the next two weeks to look at how we can keep him here when his contract ends in January, we have a bit of a break next week where we can get together. We don’t want to get to January and find Richie out of contract, I want to get this sorted before we go into the Christmas programme.”
Paul added; “There is a will from Richie to stay here and we want him to stay, he has been one of our most consistent players since re-joining the club. We now have to sit down and agree a deal that is within the budget I have been set. If I thought he was not staying, I would not have made him captain after Rob (Jones) got injured, so we now need to get our heads together. Richie makes us tick because he moans, groans and gives the lads a kick up the backside when they need it. He is one of the top ball players in this division, so is crucial to the side.”
