Brodsworth Welfare 1 Doncaster Rovers XI 2 – Abandoned after 71 minutes – floodlight failure

Referee – Mr Mark Beastall

Consisting mainly of the Youth team, a Doncaster Rovers XI went along to the Welfare Ground at Woodlands to play against Brodsworth Welfare, who are celebrating their Centenary this season.

On a mild evening a good attendance of spectators turned out to see Rovers get off to a good attacking start. Dominic Senior, in the Brodsworth goal, couldn’t hold the ball on the greasy surface giving the Rovers the chance of an early goal, he managed to block an attempt from Alex Peterson before his defence helped him out before the ball was eventually cleared.

It was the 11th minute before the home team got a sight of the Rovers goal when Shane Carver got in a shot from the right edge of the penalty area; which Callum Myers, in the Rovers goal, was equal to and saved with his legs. Brad Maddison quickly followed up but Myers had regained his position on the goal-line and made another save.

Then, Rovers went down to the other end on the left hand side and after the ball was crossed in Alex PETERSON got the first goal of the game with a tap in at the near post. Continuing to have the bulk of the play the Rovers increased their lead in the 23rd minute when the ball came in from the right and Liam WAKEFIELD bulleted a header past an astonished keeper.

At the other end Myers saved from Harry Chamberlain as the home team started to get more into the game as the half progressed. Welfare managed to pull a goal back in the 41st minute when the referee awarded a free kick on the angle of the area on the right. Gareth DAWSON drove in a powerful kick which Myers managed to get a hand to however then saw it dribble over the line.

The second half was relatively even and played mostly in midfield, with substitutes coming and going at regular intervals.

In the 71st minute came disaster; the lights went out and smoke billowed into the air from the generator. Total darkness ensued and the players shook hands and called it a night.
