The History Of The Fixture

4 January 2013

Colchester United make their first visit to the Keepmoat Stadium this weekend as they haven’t made the trip up to South Yorkshire for almost seven years.

The last time the two sides did meet, in Doncaster, was when Rovers were still at our former home, Belle Vue home.

It will be the 21st meeting between the sides in Doncaster and Rovers will be looking to get their 13th victory against the U’s and make it a winning double over Joe Dunne’s side this season.

That last game against at our former stadium wasn’t the most memorable with neither side able to get one over on the opponents however it was a good point against the side that were to gain promotion to the Championship; Rovers ended the 05/06 season just two points off a playoff spot.

Rovers average 1.5 goals per game against Colchester and have scored three goals against them on four separate occasions at home. The best result being a 3-1 victory in March 1989.

Rovers have also beaten them 3-2 twice, the last time being in November 1995. A goal from Scott Colcombe added to a brace from Graeme Jones for Rovers was enough for Kerry Dixon’s men to see off the U’s who had stayed within touching distance thanks to goals from Tony Adcock and Michael Cheetham.
