Rovers launches training programme to help unemployed in Doncaster

Doncaster Rovers Community Sports and Education Foundation are set to launch a training course which aims to get unemployed 19 to 24 year olds in the borough back to work.

The 13 week course based at the Keepmoat Stadium, entitled DRFC Level 2 Training Academy, starts in March and is being run in partnership with the Job Centre and Kingfisher Primary School. The unique package of qualifications has been put together to give learners aged 19 – 24 the chance to develop their employment pathways within the education and sports profession.

Students will have the chance to develop their coaching skills and knowledge through a curriculum built up of vocational qualifications at level 1 and level 2. Those that achieve a level 2 in Functional Skills and Numeracy will have the opportunity to volunteer and train for a position as a Teaching Assistant with Kingfisher Primary School, one of Rovers partner schools, and additionally have the chance to interview for a full-time Teaching Assistant position at the school.

As part of learning with Doncaster Rovers, students receive reimbursed travel costs, free kit, and match day tickets to selected Rovers games throughout the duration of the course

Jenna Scully, Education Manger at Rovers Education Foundation said:  “We are very excited about the prospects of offering one of our learners a full-time position within our partner school. A lot of our students seek employment working in schools after completing our courses as they realise they are good at working with children.

“We are very fortunate that Kingfisher Primary School is willing to give someone such a good opportunity and help us support the Doncaster community in offering local people employment opportunities.”

Nathan Atkinson, Head Teacher at Kingfisher Primary School, commented: “The Doncaster Rovers learners are regular volunteers in our school carrying out weekly sessions with our students."

“Our pupils love working with the students from the Rovers and we have worked with some quality young people and at times wished we could employ them in school. When thinking about appointing another teaching assistant it seemed natural to open it up to those already offering their time to us. We will trial this type of recruitment and if it's successful will use it again in the future.”

If you are interested in applying for the course and are aged between 19 and 24, claiming job seekers allowance and looking for work, please contact the Rovers Education team on 01302 765890 for more information or visit the website www.drfc-community.co.uk
