Flynn on Development Side

19 July 2013

Rover Player spoke to Brian Flynn this week for an update on how training is going while the majority of the first team is away in Portugal.

Flynn was happy to be back out on the training pitch with the young lads who signed their first professional contracts last week.

He said: “It’s been great. It’s been really reward coaching some of the young lads who didn’t travel to Portugal.

“It’s their first pre-season since becoming a professional so it’s exciting for them too in terms of the new season and the challenges that are ahead of them.

With most of the squad away this week, Brian told us that there are some positives about working with a smaller group.

He told us: “The good thing about working with a group of eight or nine is that you can get some individual technical work done which is great.”

However, during breaks in training the players were seeking the shade to get a break from the intense heat and this has had an impact on how Brian coaches.

On the weather, he said: “Fitness has been a big part of what we’ve been doing too; the heat has obviously played a big part in terms of the intensity. They’re a lot fitter now than they were at the start of the week.

“Dehydration is the important factor, during training they must keep taking lots of liquid, and by liquid I mean water.”
