19 July 2013

Rovers Under-18s have finished their Gothia Cup campaign in style with a 2-0 win over Mexican side Club América.

The young Rovers started the game in blistering fashion when Ben Askins latched onto a corner within the first four minutes.

With only 14 minutes on the clock Rovers had doubled their lead. Liam Manderville started a move, which led to Lewis Ferguson crossing for Manderville to finish off.

Rovers were creating chances throughout the game with Billy Whitehouse forcing a good save from the Club América ‘keeper after a great pass by Callum Terrell.

Next, roles were reversed when Whitehouse got to the byline to pull the ball back for Terrell who had his shot well blocked.

The Club América goalkeeper continued to keep the Mexicans in the game after a great double save to stop Askins’ header and Alex Head’s follow up.

Apart from having a number of chances, the lads defended well against a good footballing side and managed to see out a great 2-0 victory to finish the week off with a bang.

Manager Paul Wilson said after the game: “The victory was a great way to finish off a wonderful experience for our lads.

“We’ve had a great time in our fifth trip out here. A big thanks to Jim Hackett at World Youth Tours and all at Gothia Cup for giving us the chance to come out here again and gain from this experience”
