Rovers Player caught up with defender Tommy Spurr after the first day of the squad’s training camp in Portugal.

The players are spending five days at a Portuguese training camp to prepare for the upcoming Championship season, and Tommy says the squad are working hard to be in the right shape for the August 3 kick off.

He told Rovers Player: “It’s been a long day after getting up at 3am this morning but it’s been good. We’ve done two sessions already, which shows that the lads are going to work hard.

“The lads are working really hard at the moment doing two sessions a day which is tough when the sessions are really hard as well. That, mixed in with the games, is hard but it will stand us in good stead for when the season comes around.”

On a lighter note, the players are also using the trip as a bonding mission, and the team spirit is already high with the allocation of roommates for the season coming up.

Tommy said: “I’ve managed to make the cut again this year; he [Billy Paynter] has allowed me to be his roommate again. We had a quick meeting and allowed Chris Brown and James Husband to join us just for this trip.”

The left-back is also looking forward to the season beginning, and is hoping the fans can be optimistic in the club’s return to the Championship.

“It’s nice to look at the fixtures and see some of the teams we’ll be facing, and it’s great to have an opening home game. Hopefully, we can give the fans some optimism for the season.”
