U18s Suffer Cup Defeat

15 July 2013

Rovers Under 18s narrowly lost out to Helsingborgs in the first game of the 2013 Gothia Cup.

Rovers are using the annual competition as a warm up to the regular league campaign, which this year begins with a home game against Chesterfield on August 10th.

The first game of the competition saw Paul Stancliffe U18s paired against a team representing one of the best Academies in Europe, Helsingborgs.

A last minute Helsingborgs goal saw Rovers end the first game with defeat however the score line didn’t reflect the performance fairly.

Rovers did have chance of their own to win the game however were unable to take the chances when they arrived.

Callum Terrell almost broke the deadlock in the first half when he saw his effort on goal cleared off the line by a resilient Helsingborgs defence. Terrell had another chance to notch after connecting with Lewis Ferguson’s pin point cross, however this time he saw his header sail over the bar.

Ryan Burnyeat was next to try his luck after he found himself clean through with only the keeper to beat. His shot was well saved by the keeper with Spencer Lund following in however he could only fire his shot wide of the target.

The final chance of the game fell to Billy Whitehouse; although he was upended in the penalty area he managed find his feet again however was unable to find the target.

The team will now face ACBB Paris in the second group game of the competition.
