Flynn: Early Goal Was Important

24 March 2013

Manager Brian Flynn spoke to Rovers Rovers Player after his sides 3-2 over Scunthorpe United.

Flynn admitted that he was pleased with the performance and that the first goal was crucial.

“I think we started the game strongly; Scunthorpe are a team that start strongly so we needed to match that both in the first and second half, and that’s what we did.

“They were lifted by the goal just before half time, which I thought was a great technical goal taken from the free kick.  We did have a lot of chances.  We got the third goal at the right time but I must admit we switched off for their last goal, which made for a tense last few minutes.

“Generally, however, I was delighted with the team’s effort and the teamwork that was on display today.

“It was very important to get a goal early on in the game.  People will say it was fortuitous as it was an own goal but we did have three people in the box at the same time so it could easily have been finished by one of them.  You’ll take any type of goal at this stage but fair play to Scunthorpe as they played their part and I thought it was an enthralling game.

“One of the reasons I decided to go with Iain is he is very good at the darting runs behind the defender which is exactly what happened with his goal.  Big Chris [Brown] had a big chance on the right hand side when he over hit his cross. James Husband did remarkably well keeping the ball in play on the left hand side and he linked up well with Tommy Spurr and John Lundstram.  It was good football and a good technical goal.

“I think it’s important that we know how to win and finish games.  Last week we should have finished the game off in the first half but the lads are generally doing well.

“I’m glad we played today as I don’t like games in hand; I prefer points.

“The pitch played really well.  When I woke up today and saw what was outside, I thought there was no chance of playing.  The ground staff must be congratulated on getting the pitch ready.  I think they were here at 7am this morning so it’s well done to them!

“There’s only six weeks to go and we’re in a good position.  We’re happy with where we are.  To stay in this position, we need to stay relaxed, keep the players looking forward to training and games.”
