Keepmoat To Host World Title Fight

22 March 2013

World boxing fans are set to descend on Doncaster as the Keepmoat Stadium has been chosen to host the IBF Bantamweight world title fight in May.

Doncaster’s very own Jamie McDonnell will be disputing the IBF Bantamweight crown against Mexican Julio Ceja at the Keepmoat Stadium on Saturday 11 May.

The Keepmoat Stadium has beaten off competition from venues in Mexico and New York to host the fight and Jamie will have home advantage at the Keepmoat. The event will be the first time the Stadium has hosted a night of international boxing.

Promoter Dennis Hobson, said: “I am delighted to bringing the world title fight to the Keepmoat Stadium. Both Jamie and I have long been determined for his world title fight to take place at his home Stadium.

“Ceja’s camp really wanted the fight to be staged in Mexico and we had to work really hard to bring this fight to South Yorkshire. The facilities at the Keepmoat Stadium are fantastic and Jamie is exceptionally proud to be showcasing Doncaster and the stadium to the world. We would love Jamie to be crowned the first boxing world champion from Doncaster in his home town on 11 May.”

Hatfield born Jamie McDonnell is the current holder of the Commonwealth, European, and British bantamweight titles.

Gavin Baldwin, Chief Executive of Doncaster Rovers, said: “We are thrilled that the Keepmoat Stadium has been chosen to host such a fantastic international sporting event.

“We have been working very closely with Dennis Hobson and his team to secure the world title fight and it is another great accomplishment for the Stadium and strengthens the venues credentials as a multi-purpose facility.

“The event will really put Doncaster and the stadium on the world map and will be a great opportunity for us to highlight what our fantastic venue has to offer.

“We are very much looking forward to the event and I am sure that boxing fans from across the globe as well as Jamie’s local fans will come to the fight and show their support.”
