Rovers U18’s 2-1 Burton Albion U18’s

4 March 2013

Match report from Rovers U18's victory over Burton Albion.

Scorers: Billy Whitehouse, 50 mins, Chris Whincop, 75mins

Rovers continued their great form with an away win at a tough tackling Burton side. Rovers were quick into their stride and Chris Whincop had two great opportunities to score when well placed, the first was well saved and the second hitting the bar before bouncing back into play but cleared by Burton. Josh Meade shot over the bar and Evan Finnegan shot just wide from a free kick shortly after. Burton scored from a free kick which was headed into the Rovers goal from close range just before half time making it 1-0 to the home team.

The second half continued with Burton testing the referees patience and several Burton players were shown the yellow card for rash challenges. Rovers equalised when a quick free kick and good interplay saw Ferguson put in a great cross which Billy Whitehouse tapped in at the far post. Burton continued with several rash challenges on the Rovers players and one saw a Burton player shown a red card for a kick and attempted head butt on Lewis Ferguson. Rovers held their nerve and were rewarded with the winning goal when Chris Whincop continued his good form since returning from a broken leg with a twenty yard shot that found the corner of the net.

Paul Wilson said following the match ‘I was very impressed with the young players and their display for continuing to be brave and trying to play their football under the difficult circumstances that they were put under and they earned a deserved victory’
