Furman: It's One Of My Career Highlights

21 November 2013

Dean Furman spoke to Rovers Player after returning from South Africa having beaten World Cup winners Spain.

How did we beat a team like Spain?

"I must admit I am still scratching my head how we did it. To be honest we played great on the night by following a game plan. We sat back and let the Spanish have the ball when in their half and when they came in ours, we pressed them and hit them on the counter attack. We have some terrific players when going forward and we knew we could cause them problems, which it did.

“I started the game by playing against Iniesta, Busquets and Aloso in midfield, which after 70 minutes changed to Matta, Villa and Coce from Athletico Madrid. These are all amazing players and it did not get easier all night. It was a great spectacle and the game was played in good spirits throughout. It was terrific we came out with a win.

“When you play against top players like this you have to raise your game from the first whistle because these guys are so clever on and off the ball. They are so quick and amazing off the ball. If you switch off for just a minute they are away and can hurt you. We worked and were switched on for 96 minutes working as a team and for each other, which was vital. This game will be one of the highlights of my career and will live with me for a long time.

“It was a dream come true to play against them and be in the starting line up against these sort of players. I will have to see if Marc de Val will get me a Spanish shirt as I did not get one!

“So now I go from Spain on Tuesday to the Yeovil game on Friday but that game is just as important to me. The Spain game was a friendly and this game against Yeovil is massive for the club, players and fans. It’s vital we get 3 points so we are all very focussed on the game. I know it’s been a quick turn around in games and a big distance travelled but I want to play in every game and I am here today (Thursday) training, so the gaffer will decide whether I start tomorrow and if he does I’m ready.
