Keepmoat To Host SY School Games

13 November 2013

One of the region’s leading sporting venues has been selected to host the South Yorkshire Sainsbury’s School Games in Summer 2014.

The Keepmoat Stadium in Doncaster will host the action packed event on 1st July 2014, which will see youngsters taking part in the orienteering, tennis, cricket, golf and athletics county finals.

The overall event is made up of a one day festival of sport. Whilst the Keepmoat will welcome over a thousand primary and secondary school children from across South Yorkshire in July, the Winter event will take place at the EIS Sheffield in March.

This year, the Games will also feature two standalone sport finals in Sheffield – trampolining in January 2014 and Badminton in February 2014.

The 2013 South Yorkshire Sainsbury’s School Games saw more than 2,500 pupils and 300 teams competing in 13 sports for over 1,000 medals with the event supported by 160 volunteers.

Gavin Baldwin, Chief Executive of Doncaster Rovers FC, said: “We are delighted to have secured the games summer event at the Keepmoat Stadium.

“It is the first time the event has been held in Doncaster, since launching two years ago and we are hoping that schools from across the county will get involved and register to take part.

“We are very proactive at encouraging young people to engage with sport and promote the benefits of taking part in competitive sport.

“It would be fantastic to see more pupils and teams than ever before taking part in the 2014 Games."

Nigel Harrison, CEO of games organisers South Yorkshire Sport, said: “It is great to be bringing the Games to Doncaster and we are pleased to be working with the team at the Keepmoat to deliver a fantastic event next year.

“Our previous games have been a huge success and this has allowed us to build on these foundations to create an event that is even bigger and better for 2014.

“The qualifying events will be taking place at schools across the county over the next few months so now is the time for schools to sign up and be a part of this unique competition.”
