Central League East
Rotherham United U21 3 DONCASTER ROVERS U21 0
Referee – Mr J Sucheski
Rovers met an experienced Rotherham United side at the Roundwood Complex, the home of Parkgate FC, and were beaten by three clear goals on a thoroughly wet pitch. However, there was a shower before the game but the match was played in sunshine.
Rovers kicked off but it wasn’t long before the home team took the game to the Rovers. Eaves headed over from a corner in the 9th minute, Eaves had a thirty yarder saved by Maxted and Tidser fired wide from a good distance over the next six minutes. The Rovers worked hard in midfield but on losing the ball were pushed back on defence. In the 23rd minute, Tubbs had a shot on target but it took a deflection causing Maxted to dive full length to his right to put it out for a corner. Just before the half hour O’Connor fired well over from distance. Past the half hour and a good run by Tidser gave O’Connor a chance to shoot from just outside of the area but he put wide.
In the 36th minute, Paynter and Griffin played a 1-2 to put Griffin in on goal but, with the Rovers fans present getting ready to cheer the goal, he put it wide. Maxted was in action again to save from Tidser but Griffin got forward again in the 39th minute before being brought down in the Rotherham penalty area by Mills. Paynter took the penalty but hit the underside of the bar, a la Trotta, and the ball bounced away and cleared. Maxted saved from Eaves minutes later but the 43rd minute brought an incredible incident or series of them. Tubbs cut in from the left and shot inside the near post, Maxted got his right hand to it, the ball looped into the air for Bell to head against the bar from 2yards. Cadman got to the rebound and from six yards fired well over the bar. Eaves then fired wide from 25yards and the half ended following a corner from the Rovers that brought no reward.
Rotherham United 0 Doncaster Rovers 0
Rotherham set the second half going and got into the Rovers area but the ball was only cleared out to EAVES, who fired across the keeper from the left of the area and into the far corner of the net. Five minutes later Finnegan went down the Rovers left but shot just over from the angle of the penalty area. The Rovers then made a couple of substitutions and a minute later, the 53rd, they were two goals down when TIDSER rifled in from 25 yards on the left. The Rovers then got into the game and won a corner but it brought no joy.
In the 59th minute, Eaves crossed from the left for Cadman to get in a header that hit the bar and went back into play. The Rovers were now having their fair share of the play. De Val had a go from 30 yards but put just wide and fired over the bar from a couple of free kicks, Wakefield had a header to a corner that Shearer saved and the best Rovers move of the match in the 86th minute when Paynter crossed to the middle where Peterson cushioned a header back to Middleton, whose shot from the edge of the area was saved. As time began to run out Binns put in a great cross from the left that flashed across the face of the Rotherham goal without anybody getting a touch. From the goal kick Rotherham went to the Rovers end where TIDSER rifled into the bottom corner of the goal from outside of the penalty area. It was the last kick of the match as the referee immediately blew for time.
