Football League Youth Alliance Cup 1st Round

Referee – Mr K Bardsley

The Rovers U18s went out of the Youth Alliance Cup, which they won two years ago, at the first attempt when they lost at home to Hull City U18s in the 1st Round.

Hull, who are in the same League as the Rovers and have won it for the last two seasons, proved that once again they have put a good team together. They shaded the play in the first half but chances were few at both ends.

However the second half was only seven minutes old when the visitors made the breakthrough. They attacked down the right and when the low cross came in DORAN rifled in from close range.

They had another chance three minutes later when Doran put a corner to the middle where Morton put an unchallenged header wide from close range. Around the hour mark the Rovers got into the game, with Steadman firing over from distance. Mitchell Lund also fired wide after the Hull keeper, Watson, had punched away a corner.

In the 76th minute Hull added a second goal when Doran, on the Hull left, crossed low to the middle where O’CONNOR slammed into the net from close range giving Myers no chance of saving. The Rovers didn’t give up and in the last five minutes threw everything into attack ASKINS had a good header saved by Watson in the 86th minute but the keeper couldn’t stop the big centre half heading in at the far post following a free kick in the 90th minute.

Unfortunately for the Rovers that was the last of the action, with the referee blowing for time.
