27 October 2013

DONCASTER ROVERS Youth 4 Burton Albion Youth 0

Saturday, 26th October, 2013 at Cantley Park, Doncaster

Football League Youth Alliance, North East Conference

Referee – Mr L Lythall

Rovers Youth team had a good win over Burton Albion, who were one point behind the Rovers in fifth place before the game. It was only Albion’s second defeat of the season in the League.

The visitors started well when Harness, in the second minute, dribbled his way through the Rovers defence and got to the six yard line to the right of goal with only Green, in the Rovers goal, to beat but he fired wildly and well wide of goal.

Rovers then took the game to their opponents and, in the 6th minute, from a well-placed Steadman free kick, Spencer LUND, with a glancing header, registered the first goal. From this point the Rovers had the better of the game and in the 21st minute they added to their score when Paul McKAY followed up an attack to drill the ball through a crowd of players and into the net. In the 33rd minute, Ferguson went on a good run down the flank before squaring inside to TERRELL, who had time to set himself and lift the ball into the corner of the net giving the keeper no chance of reaching it.

The visitors came out for the second half having received the benefit of their coaches’ wisdom and set about the task of getting something from the game. Unfortunately for them, the 61st minute brought another reverse when Horton, the Albion keeper, failed to kill the ball when receiving a back pass, with the ball bouncing away off his foot. BURNYEAT was first to the loose ball and rifled it into the net for a fourth goal.

The match was effectively won for the Rovers but still they tried hard to add to their score. Ferguson had a good effort parried away by Horton and Spencer Lund hit the outside of the near post when he had a go from the inside right position. The Albion weathered the storm and in the 82nd minute, O’Brien got forward from left back and hit a cracking shot against the post. Otherwise Green, in the Rovers goal, wasn’t unduly troubled.
