Rovers’ International players were in action over the weekend with South African duo Dean Furman and Bongani Khumalo in the starting line up for their World Cup qualifier against Botswana.
It was a must win game for South Africa, however they also required Ethiopia to lose in the Central Africa Republic, in order to qualify for Brazil 2014.
South Africa did their part beating Botswana 4-1, however it was not to be as Ethiopia came from behind to beat the Central African Republic 2-1 to ensure they would finish in top spot of Group A in the African World Cup Qualifying tables.
South Africa took the lead on 27 minutes with Kermit Erasmus scoring his first international goal before Rovers midfielder Dean Furman doubled the lead just before half-time, following a flurry of missed opportunities, side-footing his effort into the net off the post.
Although South Africa dominated the game and won 4-1, the result was irrelevant as Ethiopia came back from being one goal behind to win 2-1, which confirmed their place at the top of the group.
Both Dean [Furman] and Bongani [Khumalo] will now return to Doncaster to prepare for our Sky Bet Championship game against Huddersfield Town on Saturday.
