Coppinger "raring to go"

6 August 2014

Fans favourite urges positivity.

James Coppinger has backed the future stars of Doncaster Rovers to do well this season and says there’s no reason the Club can’t compete at the right end of the League 1 table.

The midfielder, who recently signed a new two year deal, has made over 400 appearances for Rovers and hopes to see the emphasis on younger players yield long term success.

“We’ve got a young back four and it’s a massive opportunity for a lot of young lads and it’s about stepping up to the plate and carving a career so they’re looking forward to that and progressing,” he said.

“The senior pros like me and Rob (Jones) are trying to bring the young lads on and have a successful season.

“I think as a young lad you have a fear of failure and letting people down so it’s about staying positive and changing your mindset. You have nothing to lose, you’ve got a fantastic opportunity at a fantastic club at this age with good people around you and it’s about using them and asking questions to understand how you’re going to improve as a player.”

Rovers kick off their campaign with the long trip to face old foes Yeovil Town on Saturday and Coppinger said that he is “raring to go.”

“We want to be successful and win the league like everyone in the division, there’s no reason we can’t. We’ve got some fantastic players in the squad, although it’s a smaller squad, we had a smaller squad when we won the league so we know what we’re capable of and what has to be done,” he said.

“We’re raring to go and I think we’re going to have a successful season this season.

“It’s only a big ask (promotion) if you think it’s a big ask, but as a group of players that’s what we’re looking to do – why would you not want to do that as Champions?

“We’ve got some good talent and it’s about bringing them on and looking to the future.”
