Wellens: "I'm Pleased To Be Staying"

8 January 2014

Doncaster Rovers Official Website caught up with Richie Wellens after confirming that he will be staying at the club.

Are you pleased to put an end to all the speculation regarding your future at the club?

"Obviously it’s taken a while and talks have been on going but I’m pleased to have got something sorted with the club. Hopefully now we can just concentrate on trying to stay in the league and get some good results."

Has it been a distraction and can you now focus on playing football?

"The focus for myself and the club has always been to stay in this league, but we have to bounce back from a bad run of results. Recently even when our performances have been good we’ve still struggled to get the results and have been unlucky there. But if we can start putting a few wins together and pick ourselves up then I think we will be okay."

How confident are you that the club can improve on their recent form and avoid relegation from the Championship?

"After the first 10 games it looked like we would survive comfortably and be mid table but we all know football isn’t like that, and the last ten games haven’t gone as well as we’d hoped. There’s very little points between the teams in the bottom half of the table, so we need to start putting back to back wins together, and if you can do that it increases your position in the league fairly quickly.

I’m confident we can do that, which is one of the reasons why I want to stay at the club. I want to be part of a team that gets back to winning ways and stays in the league because that’s what everybody wants, for the club and for the fans."
