Doncaster Rovers Head For The Heat

13 July 2014

Rovers teams young and old travel overseas as the under 18’s leave for Sweden.

As Paul Dickov’s men head to the Algarve to continue their pre season in the heat, Rovers footballers of the future travel to Sweden to take part in the annual Gothia Cup.

Doncaster Rovers Under 18 squad departed for Gothenburg yesterday morning from the Keepmoat Stadium and will play 5 matches in 5 days in an intense week of football for the youngsters.

Attended by clubs all over the world, the Gothia Cup is an ‘invitation only’ event.

Head of Youth at Doncaster Rovers, Paul Stancliffe said:

“It’s great to be invited back to Gothenburg. This will be the 5th year running we’ve attended.

“It’s always a great week. Gothenburg’s population increases by about 200,000 people so there’s always a good atmosphere there.

“Our squad is a lot younger than the other clubs who attend but it’s a real test for us and an eye opener for the new young boys.

“We are obviously very professional when we’re out there taking part and want to do as well as we can, but it’s also a perfect time for the team to bond and everyone to get to know each other better.

“To play teams from countries such as Brazil, Mexico and Turkey is really beneficial for our preparation ahead of the new season.

“We’ve finished 4th the last two years so we will be looking to do that again. It’s very physically testing for the boys with 5 matches in 5 days, but that’s exactly what you want going into a new season.”
