DONCASTER ROVERS Youth 2 Notts County Youth 0
Referee – Mr M Knowles
A sunny spring afternoon was perfect weather for a game of football as the two teams battled it out in this re-arranged Youth fixture.
Rovers started well and it got better in the 6th minute when BURNYEAT closed the Notts keeper, Andrews, down as he tried to clear the ball, which hit the Rovers man and rebounded into the empty net. Although the visitors must have been stunned by this they fought their way into the game. A fairly even game ensued in the remainder of the first half, mostly played out in midfield.
The second half had a similar start to the first. In the 52nd minute a long clearance out of the Rovers defence found Whitehouse, who ran clear on goal but his shot was blocked by the oncoming keeper. STEADMAN picked up the rebound, made space and fired into the empty net from 20yards. Minutes later Andrews, in the County goal, did well to thwart Ferguson. Again the County lads got back into the game, with Hodge orchestrating their play from midfield and only good work by Askins and his fellow defenders kept the County at bay.
However, Rovers were comfortably in command of the game and in the 71st minute Askins produced his trademark of a header on goal from a corner which Andrews saved. McLaren was called upon around this time as his defence got into a bit of a tangle but he was equal to the occasion and emerged with the ball. Later Terrell tried an overhead kick from 15 yards but put it over the bar. With five minutes to Blaney fired well wide from a good position on the edge of the penalty area following a Notts free kick. Then a good move down Rovers right ended with Terrell squaring to the middle where Whitehouse got in a shot but it lacked power and Andrews made the save.
It was a good, confident display from the Rovers, who always looked the better side.
