Get on your bike for Bluebell Wood

23 May 2014

Fun loving fitness fans in South Yorkshire are being urged to jump on a bike and support a Superhero Spinathon for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice.

The event will give adults and children the chance to pedal on one of 25 stationary bikes, at Lakeside Village Outlet Shopping Centre, Doncaster, on Saturday, June 21, from 10am – 4pm.
Each ‘superhero’ cyclist will clock up as many miles as they can to raise sponsorship which will help the work of South Yorkshire’s only children’s hospice.

The fun-filled day, also supported by Doncaster Culture and Leisure Trust and Doncaster Rovers Football Club, will feature family activities including face-painting and a colouring competition.

The Superhero Spinathon is for Children’s Hospice Week in June which raises vital funds and awareness of the work of children’s hospices.

This year’s initiative has a heroes theme – as it encourages adults and children to do something fun and heroic by raising money to help hospices support children with shortened life expectancy and their families.

The event is being backed by Maxine Strong from Doncaster. Her son Alexander was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called neuroblastoma on Christmas Eve 2009 at four years old. He fought a tireless battle to beat it until he sadly passed away at Bluebell Wood in January 2013.

Maxine, aged 46, said: “The nurses and all the support staff at Bluebell Wood were to us superheroes, because of all the care they gave us when we needed it most. So please come and support Bluebell Wood by taking part in the Superhero Spinathon.”

Doncaster‘s three time world Taekwondo champion, four time Olympian and hospice patron Sarah Stevenson is also encouraging others to support the event.
Sarah, who took home bronze at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, said: “I’m very proud to be backing an event which supports two of my passions in life, fitness and the inspiring work of Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. So please sign up this fun event.”

Rachael Dawes, corporate fundraiser at Bluebell Wood, said: “Many thanks to Lakeside Village Shopping Outlet, Doncaster Culture and Leisure Trust and Doncaster Rovers Football Club. This will be a fun and fabulous event, so we want to encourage as many people as possible sign up and get sponsored for Superhero Spinathon.

“Every penny raised helps Bluebell Wood to give our families more time together, to enjoy fun activities which create special, happy memories.”
