PREVIEW: Fleetwood v Rovers

18 October 2014

Highbury Stadium, Sat 18th October 2014, League One.

Rovers head to the Fylde coast to play against Fleetwood Town for the first time. Originally formed in the early 1900’s, the name ‘Fleetwood Town’ wasn’t formally established until the early 21st century!

The self-proclaimed ‘Cod Army’ was competing in the Conference North as recently as 2010, when they won promotion to the fifth tier of English football via the play-offs.

The north-west coastline has seen it’s fair share of success in recent years, from Blackpool’s Premier League exploits to the resurgence of Morecambe and Southport; while AFC Fylde are taking the non league scene by storm.

Yet no one has epitomised progress like Graham Alexander’s side, who won promotion to the Football League in 2012, where they swept all before them thanks to the goals of now Premier League striker Jamie Vardy.

Money has been invested wisely in the Highbury based outfit, who surprised everyone – bar themselves – to gain another play-off win when they defeated Burton in last season’s League 2 showdown at Wembley as the big names continue to flock to the seaside.
