Midfielder Richard Chaplow on picking the “right horse” and being positive ahead of new season.Richard Chaplow appeared to relish the forthcoming League 1 season and said that both he and the Doncaster Rovers squad are optimistic of competing once proceedings kick off in earnest against Bury on Saturday (3pm).
Chaplow, a summer arrival from Millwall, said: "I think we're optimistic going in to the season, the gaffer's been working hard us hard throughout pre season so we'll look to go and take the game to Bury and we'll go in to it full of confidence.
"I think it (pre season) puts us in a position of confidence in terms of some of the performances - they've been outstanding some of them, in particular Sunderland where they were top drawer."
The 30 year old lauded the squad at Paul Dickov's disposal and said that it was a major pull for him when joining.
"I think one of the pulls of me coming to the football club was some of the players that were here already and then some of the singings the gaffer's made e.g. Williams. I like to get on the ball and having played against Richie and Copps then I knew it would be a good fit for me," he said.
"As things progress and we understand each other more then we can carve out some more chances for the front men to stick away.
"It’s testament to the gaffer and the board because they’ve put their money where there mouth is and the recruitment all throughout the team has increased the competition for places and it means there’s no room for complacency.
"I don’t think I’d have joined if we weren’t in a place to compete for the top end of League One. I had to pick the right horse from the clubs that were in front of me and I thought Doncaster was the strongest and quality has been added since so I have no doubt that we'll be fighting at the top end of the division."
