Foundation are the WHEEL deal

3 August 2015

The Club Doncaster Foundation is delighted to be launching an exciting new cycling programme to get the people of Doncaster to explore their local community by bike.

Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council’s long term sustainable transport department have funded the programme aiming to inspire the public to get active!

The programme, in partnership with DCLT (Doncaster Culture Leisure Trust) and other local providers will train 390 young people 16-18 years old to become more competent on a bike focusing on road safety as well as providing an affordable means of transport. The safety training consists of both practical and theory elements where the teenagers will learn vital skills in how to conduct a pre safety check on their bike and learn how to safely ride on the road to ensure they are seen by motorists and understand the dangers associated with road cycling as the number of accidents involving young people and bikes is on the increase.

The second element of the programme is to implement a new free of charge cycle hire scheme operating from the Keepmoat Stadium including guided cycle rides around the lakeside, ideal for families exploring the scenic landscape and cycling greenways that link the local area.

The Foundation is also now recognised as an official Yorkshire Bank Bike Library to be known as Rovers Bike Library, a concept for the public to donate unwanted bikes which will then be modified and used as part of our hire scheme to allow more people to access cycling.

The cycle hire scheme will officially be open from 03/08/15. Open 10-8 Monday to Friday, 10-3 Saturday unless it is a match day (where it will be open 10-1) and 10-2 Sunday.

Locally, the popularity of people cycling has increased majorly in part due to recent high profile events including Le Tour De France Grand Depart and the first ever Tour De Yorkshire. It is this legacy of events that we hope to build upon through our schemes to make cycling more accessible for everybody.

So why not come down and give cycling a go?!
