Corporal Earning His Stripes

5 June 2015

Player coach says he is learning all the time.

Following the recent announcement that defender Rob Jones has extended his Doncaster Rovers career by a further year, the 35 year old – who will continue coaching the development side – talked about how he is progressing as a coach.

“There’s new up and coming managers with new ideas, philosophies, new styles of play and the players they want in their teams and it’s great to see,” said the giant defender, jovially nicknamed ‘The Corporal’.

“I’ve got my development squad again. I thoroughly enjoyed it last year and learned a lot.

“I’m starting to mould myself in to the coach and manager that I want to be and that comes with time on the training pitch and on the touchline and that comes with making key decisions at pivotal moments.”

Jones has worn many hats during his three year stay at Keepmoat Stadium, but says he can still play a vital role in the team’s fortunes next term.

“I’m glad mine’s done and I can go away and concentrate on me and my development squad and what’s right for them. We finished close to the top last season and we want to progress further, I want to continue to bring players in to the first team like we did last season because that’s my role," he said.

“I hope I’m the start of many that come through the door because we need a big squad and a good squad to have a good go next year and I’m sure Paul [Dickov] is working tirelessly to do that.

“We’ll let the manager get on with his job, me get on with mine and in between it all, I’ll continue to play football.”
