Foundation Friday: NCS participants graduate

1 May 2015

Last week the Keepmoat Stadium played host to the spring National Citizen Service graduation ceremony, where over 60 people who took part in the spring edition of NCS graduated from the programme.

NCS is a nationally recognised youth engagement programme available to all 15-17 year-olds in England during the school holidays, where people build skills for work and life, whilst taking on new challenges and meeting new friends.

Participants who took part in the spring edition participated in a series of adrenaline filled activities such as rock climbing, abseiling and raft building at Hawkeshead activity centre, whilst also learned key life skills through first aid training.

Upon their return, participants then carried out a social action project to help the local community in and around Doncaster, helping people and bringing local areas closer together.

To celebrate their success of completing the programme, all graduates received a certificate signed by Prime Minister David Cameron, which was followed by a meal and disco.

Speaking about his experience of completing NCS, David Bruce, 16 from Edenthorpe said: “It was a really good experience, I’d never do things like walk up a mountain normally, but there was a real sense of accomplishment afterwards.

“After our trip to Hawkeshead we completed social action projects and even though you think it wouldn’t make an impact originally, you can see that the people who are close to that particular area of the community, that it really matters so much to them and when you reflect I was really glad I did it.

“It definitely showed what my limits are, I’d recommend people to do NCS because you’ll be surprised at how much you enjoy it.”

NCS will once again be returning in the summer and now is your chance to take part.  We have five dates available during the holiday listed below:

NCS co-ordinator Jan Budtz spoke about the programme stating: "Completing the NCS programme looks great on people's CV, not only do they have a great time, but participants also make a real change to the hearts of communities through social action projects, it really is a fantastic experience and one I wish was available when I was younger."
