Stancliffe pleased to progress

16 September 2015

Paul Stancliffe spoke to Doncaster Rovers following the Development's 90th minute winner against Preston North End.

Despite periods of domination for the home side, the game remained goalless for 90 minutes, until trialist Daniel Hector scored the winner in the 91st minute to see Rovers through to the second round.

“It’s an excellent time to score. Not many teams can come back when you score that late on, I thought we deserved it in the end," he said.

“It was a good, honest performance by us and I think we just shaded it a little bit. Credit to Preston obviously, I don’t know it looked like from higher up but certainly from the dugout I thought it was a good game from both teams. I thoroughly enjoyed watching it.

“The way we held our shape was impressive, it’s something we’ve not done a lot of work on but we touched on it yesterday and the way the boys listened and tried to put things into practice was great. It wasn’t perfect, we know that but it was very promising."

The win sees Rovers progress and they will face either Burnley or Wigan in round two.

“It’s always good to progress in any cup competition. Preston are a big club and a good club so I’m happy with everyone today.

“These Development games are vital for everyone progressing through. If we don’t have the Development side then there’s nothing in between the youth team and first team, but you’re not always ready when you leave the youth team.

"You need something in between and we feel as coaches that these games are vital, especially against good opposition. They will learn from this more than they will learn on the training ground."
