Ferguson pre-Coventry

22 April 2016

Gaffer says that 3 wins gives Rovers a chance.

Darren Ferguson has said that Doncaster Rovers need to win their remaining three fixtures if they are to stay in Sky Bet League One, starting with the visit of Coventry City to Keepmoat Stadium on Saturday.

Nine points would give Rovers “a chance” according to the Scot who said that he won’t be keeping an eye on other scores that may influence his side’s fate.

“With three left, we do need nine points,” said Ferguson.

“It’s in our hands now; we have to do our job on Saturday.

“I’m not overly bothered about other results; we’ve got to concentrate (on ourselves). I think it’s a clear case of we have to win three games now.”

Ferguson who saw his side play their part in a pulsating 2-2 draw in the reverse fixture against the Sky Blues at the Ricoh Arena in November is hoping to extend the season as long as possible but knows the gap to safety could be anything between two and eight points by 5pm on Saturday.

“This time last week, if we didn’t pick up four points then we’d have been down,” he said.

“The message is simple to the players; focus on the game in front of you, do your job, hopefully get the win and take it to the next one. If we do that, then I’ll be happy.

“I think we’re fully aware of our responsibilities as when you go from one league to another it can have ramifications all through the football club.

“There’s no getting away from the fact that it would be an absolute nightmare if we got relegated for all different reasons. Footballing wise – what I look at – it’s not where we want to be as a football club and we’re not getting away from that but we still feel we’ve got a chance.”
