DF on Forest Test

9 August 2016

Gaffer talks about EFL Cup R1 game against Championship opposition.

Darren Ferguson could make changes to his starting XI when Rovers host four time League Cup winners Nottingham Forest on Tuesday evening.

As Ferguson watched his side lose by the odd goal in 5 at the weekend, his counterpart Philippe Montanier saw his Forest side win a 7 goal Championship thriller against Burton Albion.

“It’s quite hectic; Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday and five games in the first few weeks,” opened Ferguson.

“I’ll make changes to the team from Saturday – I was always going to.

“There’s one or two who I want to look at but with the changes I’d like to think that it doesn’t weaken the team and we can implement stuff that we’ve worked on.”

The Scot might not be the only one to shuffle his pack and he expects the Frenchman at the City Ground helm to do similarly.

“They’ve got a new manager and I’d imagine they’d bring quite a few fans because it’s not far, they’re a big club and we’ve watched them from Saturday,” he said.

“I think they’ll make a lot of changes; they’ve got a game on Friday night – against Brighton – rather than on the Saturday.

“I might be wrong but I would have thought they’ve got a big squad so that can be difficult in terms of what we show the players but it’ll be mainly about the shape they play and how we can stop their strengths and exploit their weaknesses.”

The game against Forest is the first of three in a week at the Keepmoat – with Crawley and Cambridge due on Saturday and Tuesday respectively – and Ferguson wants a good performance from his troops.

“Now we’ve got three home matches on the bounce, we’ve got a cup match that we’re capable of getting through I feel – you need a bit of luck in cup games – but the key for me is make sure that we get a good performance,” he said.

“We need to make sure we learn from Saturday.

“I think if we get those two together then we’ve got half a chance.”
