Crown Ground, Saturday 6th August 2016, 3pm, Sky Bet EFL 2.
Rovers kick off the brand new campaign on Saturday when they make the trip to Accrington Stanley upon returning to the fourth tier for the first time since 2004.
The South Yorkshire side will be hoping that their stay in the newly named ‘EFL Sky Bet League Two’ is as swift and successful as the last time they played at this level when, under the guidance of Dave Penney, Rovers romped to the title ahead of Hull City and Huddersfield Town.
Since relegation to League Two, Rovers have been extremely busy in the transfer market and strengthened all areas of the pitch.
Goalkeeper Ross Etheridge and defender Joe Wright should return to the Crown Ground where they achieved a fourth placed finish last term. In addition to the young pairing, manager Darren Ferguson has acquired the services of Tommy Rowe, Mathieu Baudry, Tyler Garratt, Matty Blair, Gary McSheffrey, Riccardo Calder, John Marquis and Alfie Beestin.
Rovers have not faced Stanley in a league fixture since the April 1961 when, three days after a 1-0 home win, the teams played out a 2-2 draw in East Lancashire; Tony Leighton bagging a brace for the visitors.
TEAM NEWS: Luke McCullough is the major absentee after he was ruled out for the season with a cruciate ligament injury similar to that of Aaron Taylor-Sinclair. The game is also too early for Mathieu Baudry, Craig Alcock, Gary McSheffrey and probably Paul Keegan. Joe Wright and Harry Middleton could feature.
