Ferguson post-Barnsley

22 February 2016

Manager makes his thoughts known after 1-0 loss to Barnsley at Oakwell.

Darren Ferguson believes that a win was not too far away from Doncaster’s grasp following Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Barnsley.

The Reds snatched a win late on courtesy of Manchester United loanee Ashley Fletcher’s late tap in.

“I am (seeing enough to believe a win is around the corner); what I’ve just said to the players they need to listen to in terms of where I want to go but we didn’t deserve to lose put it that way,” said Ferguson.

“I thought they battled away quite well, it was another derby for us coming quickly after last week (a 1-0 loss to Sheffield United) and it was a better performance.

“Unfortunately, maybe a month ago we might have nicked that 1-0 but at the moment we’re losing games like that when we didn’t deserve to lose.”

Ferguson called for greater potency from his side and a need to climb to the security of mid-table sooner rather than later.

“I thought we could have been a bit more threatening at times but that’s what happens when you’re on a bit of a bad run, you lose games like that and really I don’t think we should have,” he said.

“It was a disappointing result again, we’re on a bad run – there’s no question about that – and we need to get out of it.

“We’ve got to make sure we’re consistent in terms of what we do, we’ve got a really big week in training and a big game against Millwall to look forward to and if we do that then I believe we can return to winning ways – you don’t go from a good team to a bad team all of a sudden and a month ago we probably nick the game.”
