Get Doncaster walking!

14 January 2016

On Saturday the 2016 ‘Get Doncaster Walking’ programme will kick off in style with a walk around the Lakeside led by famous local soldier Ben Parkinson MBE.

This event is the first walk of the 2016 'Get Doncaster Walking' festival, which is celebrating its 10 year anniversary.

The walk is a 1.7 mile route, starting at the Keepmoat Stadium while taking in the sights of the lake and surrounding area. Leading the 1.7 mile walk around Lakeside will be a fantastic and significant milestone for Ben Parkinson in his rehabilitation, as even completing the route would have been impossible for him a short time ago. However, following his hard work in 2015, and amazing progress in his physical condition, Ben was determined to challenge himself and take part in this walk.

Ben’s progress has been well-documented, including a recent BBC One documentary ‘Ben Parkinson Wilderness Warrior’, where Ben and his team rowed the Yukon River in Canada. The distance of the route on Saturday reflects a major achievement.

The sponsored walk is in partnership with Club Doncaster Foundation and Pilgrim Bandits charity. The walk is the focal point of a full day activity, that also includes discounted football tickets for Saturday's game against Gillingham for all participants who take part.

‘Get Doncaster Walking’ is a council-led programme of free organised walks, ranging from light strolls to more lengthy walks in the country, designed to get local people of all fitness levels out enjoying the fresh air, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and socialising.

You can join Ben for this gentle walk completely free of charge - it's a fantastic way to get fit, meet new people and also raise money for charity (Ben's Pilgrim Bandits charity will be collecting money on the day.) For more information on Saturday's walk, visit the 'Lakeside Ben Parkinson Sponsored Walk' Facebook page.

The Club Doncaster Foundation is also generously offering reduced-price tickets to Doncaster Rovers' home game against Gillingham, taking place once the walk has finished, for anyone who comes along.
