PREVIEW: DRFC v Gills

15 January 2016

Saturday 16th January 2016 (3pm), Sky Bet League One, Keepmoat Stadium.

Doncaster Rovers return to the Keepmoat Stadium for their first home league fixture of 2016 looking to prove their credentials against high flying Gillingham.

The hosts will be buoyed by their recent FA Cup performance where they ran Premier League Stoke City close in a third round encounter before losing 2-1 to the top flight outfit while the return of midfielder Cameron Stewart to Darren Ferguson’s squad until the end of the season on loan from Ipswich Town will also provide much optimism for the Yorkshiremen.

Rovers are in good league form, having lost just twice in ten outings, which has seen them rise in to the top half of the League One table.

Facing the Gills will be no easy task though as has been proved in recent seasons. The pair met last season and, after a 2-1 defeat at Keepmoat Stadium in December, reconvened in Kent for a windswept 1-1 draw; most memorable for Harry Forrester’s audacious 40 yard free kick.

This season, a debatable second half strike from Jake Hessenthaler – which was adjudged to have crossed the line despite the best efforts of Mitchell Lund – separated the two sides and proved to be the final game of Paul Dickov’s managerial tenure.

TEAM NEWS: The aforementioned Stewart could take a place in the matchday squad, as could James Coppinger who missed the FA Cup clash with Stoke due to an ankle injury.
