PREVIEW: DRFC v Potters

8 January 2016

Saturday 9th January 2016 (3pm), FA Cup Round Three, Keepmoat Stadium.

Doncaster Rovers will be looking to defy the odds and cause an FA Cup Third Round upset when they host Premier League Stoke City on Saturday at Keepmoat Stadium.

Darren Ferguson, a former teammate of Potters boss Mark Hughes at Manchester United, has seen his side overcome Stalybridge Celtic (2-0) and Cambridge United (3-1) en route to the third round and a first meeting with top flight opposition for five seasons.

Forty-five places separate Rovers and Stoke in the Football League ladder, but the hosts will be looking to take advantage of the 2011 finalists who will have an eye on European competition via either the Capital One Cup or Premier League, both of which they are handily placed in.

The only FA Cup meeting between the clubs came in 1930, when a Fred Emery strike saw Rovers progress to the Fourth Round; where they succumbed to Millwall (0-4) in front of over 30,000 at the Den.

The last meeting between the sides was in their first ever respective League Cup tie in October 1960 where a Ronnie Walker double and a John Meredith strike saw off the Potters – then of the second tier – in front of over 5,000 at Belle Vue. Rovers would go on to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the next round.

Last time out (18th October 1960):
DRFC 3 (Walker x 2; Meredith)
SCFC 1
League Cup Round Two

Attendance – 5694

DRFC – Nimmo, Mordue, Kilkenny, Fernie, Broadbent, Meredith, Haigh, Curtis, Lunn, Walker, Hymers.
SCFC - Unknown

WHAT ARE THE ODDS? Rovers 16/5, Draw 5/2, SCFC 10/11
