Rossington Main 0-4 Rovers

12 July 2016

It was a routine victory for Darren Ferguson’s Doncaster Rovers in their first pre-season friendly of the campaign.

Rovers made the short trip from Cantley Park to local club Rossington Main as they got their first 90 minutes in the bank ahead of the 2016/17 season.

There was a mixture of young and old in the Rovers squad and as expected, the men in red dominated from the off. Ryan Misselwhite in goal for Rossington Main was kept busy from the start and made a good save early on when new signing John Marquis broke into the box before blasting one at goal. The Main keeper bravely came off his line to stop the effort.

Minutes later James Coppinger put Rovers ahead with a stunning free kick from 25 yards that curled into the top corner.

Coppinger was involved in the second goal minutes later when he floated a corner to the edge of the area, where it was met by young Will Longbottom whose first time volley hit the back of the net - a great goal.

At half time Ferguson made ten changes and a different side took the field for the second half. Rovers continued to dominate and it took just two minute for another new signing to make his mark.

Tommy Rowe latched onto a long ball and smashed a lovely shot past the Main goalkeeper with his left foot to make it 3-0.

Matty Blair was dominant down the left and linked up well with Rowe and Cedric Evina and he was denied by substitute goalkeeper Simon Dye when his close range header was tipped behind for a corner.

Joe Pugh went close, as did Andy Williams before a mix up at the back gave Williams the chance to be through on goal and he made no mistake in slotting the ball past Dye for Rovers fourth.

It was a dominant performance from Rovers as their attention turns now to Saturday when Premier League Middlesbrough visit the Keepmoat.
