Introducing some of the stars we may face in pre-season.
Rovers welcome the Magpies to Keepmoat Stadium for their first friendly since July 2008. The pair met in competition during the 2009/10 Championship season but a lot has changed at both clubs since.
Here www.doncasterroversfc.co.uk takes a look at some of the figures for Rafa Benitez’s side who could feature in the pre-season friendly on Wednesday 20th July.
Matz Sels – Giant Belgium ‘keeper Sels arrived in the summer from Gent as the Toon’s first summer signing. United paid a reported £5.5M for the 24 year old’s services to compete with – or perhaps replace – Dutchman Tim Krul between the sticks.
Matt Ritchie – The 26 year old has enjoyed a meteoric rise from the lower leagues to become a full international with Scotland. Having progressed with Swindon Town and AFC Bournemouth, the cultured winger completed a £12M move from the south coast to the north east. Although his move away from the Cherries represents a step down in leagues, his stock could continue to grow if he helps Newcastle back to the top flight.
Dwight Gayle – Still only 25 years of age, it feels like Gayle has been talked about for years! A player Rovers manager Darren Ferguson once paid over £500,000 for while at Peterborough, the Scot should know all about the striker’s goalscoring ability. Gayle moved from London Road to the capital itself and Crystal Palace in a big money move. For the third season in a row Gayle finished the season as top scorer in all competitions for the Eagles but was sold to United for a figure in the region of £10M.
Deals to sign Spaniard Jesus Gamez and Scotland international Grant Hanley could be completed over the weekend.
Meanwhile Steven Caulker, Aden Flint and Alvaro Arbeloa have all been linked with moves to St James’ Park.
