The thoughts of loanee midfielder Riccardo Calder.
Riccardo Calder staked his claim for a starting spot in Wednesday night’s pre-season friendly against Newcastle United.
The game against the Magpies is the final warm up fixture at Keepmoat Stadium this summer and the Aston Villa loanee could make a start after being awarded the man of the match award for his second half display in the 2-0 loss to Premier League Middlesbrough.
“It was my first game against a decent side,” he said.
“I think we, as a team, need to start well and take it in to the season.
“There’s been a lot of signings and decent players; we’re a team but everyone’s got to fight for their position.
“We’re just getting to know each other and want to start winning games.”
Calder, 20, sees his return on loan from Aston Villa as the beginning of a new era in South Yorkshire.
“I could have gone to a couple of other teams but Doncaster are a good club and I wouldn’t say that they're a League Two team so hopefully we can get up there and get back to League One, I want to be a part of it,” he revealed.
“Last season we were around the bottom fighting to stay up and this season we want to fight for promotion and be up there and around it.
“I thought I did well at the end of the season but because it’s the start of the season and we’ve got new signings I see it as a new start. Everyone’s good, good to play with and it’s a good dressing room.”
