Historic Away Kit

9 June 2016

As we count down to the launch of the 2016/17 Doncaster Rovers official away kit, doncasterroversfc.co.uk is taking a look at kits that will go down in history as having significance upon the club.

Fans have until 23:59 on 10th June to pre-order their new kit for the 2016/17 season.

Season: 2003/04 & 2004/05

Supplier: Carlotti

Sponsor: Streetwise Sports

Rovers returned to the Football League with a bang – and in a sleek looking blue with white trim away kit to boot – with an opening day win over Leyton Orient at Brisbane Road in the baking heat. Few of the 3,000 in the away end in east London will forget Gregg Blundell’s glancing header or Leo Fortune-West’s double.

Dave Penney’s side, who would go on to win the league ahead of Yorkshire rivals Hull City and Huddersfield Town, boasted the best away record in the division and their counter-attacking was second to none.

The Belle Vue side sported the same alternative kit upon their return to the third tier as the shirt proved a big hit with the fans. So did Rovers as their resurgence continued under Penney and the likes of Welsh international Neil Roberts (above) were acquired.

Rovers ended their days in the much loved kit with a thrilling 2-2 draw against Bristol City at Ashton Gate in which Fortune-West again poached a double, as did future striker Steve Brooker. It earned Rovers a tenth placed finish, just five shy of the play-offs.
