Gaffer in seventh heaven after latest summer signing.
Darren Ferguson has said that he expects new signing John Marquis to be a hit with supporters due to his impressive work rate.
The first team manager was speaking exclusively to doncasterroversfc.co.uk following his seventh summer signing.
“We’re pleased to get it done. He’s a different type of striker who’s got good experience for a 24 year old,” said Ferguson.
“His work ethic means the fans will take to him straight away, he never gives defenders a minute and in terms of how I want to play, that will help.
“He’s good with his back to goal; he’ll keep hold of the ball and do something in the last third. His goalscoring record is pretty decent as well which is pretty important.”
Marquis, who arrived from Millwall, has had plenty of experience on loan away from the New Den and his most recent spell (with Northampton Town) yielded six goals in 15 appearances and, with it, the League Two title.
“He’s played a lot at the Championship, in League 1 and obviously last season was pivotal to helping Northampton get out of the league so it’s a really good signing,” continued Ferguson.
“When I met him I liked him, his determination and the way in which he wants to kick on in his career.
“He’s had quite a few loan moves but he wants to get settled so I had a good chat with him, everything we needed to do and he was delighted to sign.
“That now gives me Andy Williams, Gary McSheffrey who we’ve signed and now John and (Liam) Mandeville so I’ve got good options.
“We’re possibly looking to get one in one loan – a quicker one, a striker – to give us a little more pace up there but that’s something we can concentrate on after pre-season has started.
“John was the one that we looked at – did a lot of research on – and he ticked a lot of boxes.”
