One of THE all-time away performances from a Rovers side, Doncaster’s return to the second tier for the first time in 50 years resulted in the humbling of Derby County on the opening day of the 08/09 season.

Having earned promotion via the League One play offs the previous season, Sean O’Driscoll’s men exhibited their brand of football on a watchful crowd of over 30,000 inside Pride Park and came away with three points against the Rams who’d been recently relegated thanks to the solitary strike of Lewis Guy (above).

Despite the fluid football, which former Arsenal and England midfielder Paul Merson described as “different class” on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday, Rovers found themselves bottom of the Championship at Christmas.

O’Driscoll’s persistence would pay off though and Rovers would amass an astonishing set of results bettered only by Champions Wolves in the second half of the season.

The Yorkshire side recorded 13 of their 17 wins for the whole campaign between Boxing Day (a 4-2 demolition of Nottingham Forest) and the end of what proved to be a truly remarkable season.
