Gaffer lays down gauntlet to squad and calls for momentum.
Darren Ferguson has set out his intentions to mould his squad over the summer ready for the rigours of League Two football next season.
The Scot said he was “excited” by the challenge of returning the club to the third tier, something that is a priority in his eyes.
“We move on, I’ve got to look at the challenge and be excited about the challenge,” he said.
“We’ve got to get momentum back in to the football club.
“Clearly the message is get out of the league as quick as we can.
“We’ll try our best to get the right players in; it’s made more difficult now we’re in League 2 as players won’t want to drop to that level understandably.
“We want to get momentum back though and we’ve got to start the season well and we’ve got to have a good summer recruitment-wise.”
Ferguson, ahead of the impending announcement of the retained list, was hopeful that the core of his squad would remain as he looks to put his stamp on the club as a whole.
“They know, the ones that I’ve spoken to, who I want to keep, not one of them said that they wanted to jump ship,” Ferguson continued.
“I’m sure we’ll get enquiries about some players – I’d be surprised if we didn’t – but after I spoke to them as a group I think they can see I’ve put in place the challenge of getting out of the league immediately, have a good pre season and have all the things that you need to get out of the league.
“It’s imperative (that we do that). Without putting too much pressure on, my message to the fans is that we have to get out of this league first time and we fully intend to.
“I’m totally up for the challenge and I do believe if we make the right recruitment we’ve got a really good chance of getting out of the league and then we can see where that takes us.”
