DF praises character

With Rovers needing one more win to seal a return to Sky Bet League One, Darren Ferguson wants his players to embrace the situation.

A win against Mansfield Town at the Keepmoat Stadium would secure promotion, and the Rovers boss says the character within the team is what has got them this far.

“Everyone had to buy into the way I wanted to do things here, fortunately the players have so that’s very pleasing,” he said.

“I don’t have to overstate the importance of the game as it’s staring us in the face, the players know that but it’s important that they play the game and not the occasion.

“We’re nearly there and we want to complete the job in terms of the promotion on Saturday if we can, we’ve taken a step back to go forwards again but that’s sometimes the way it has to be.”

Steve Evans’ Mansfield team are four points off the play-off places, with Ferguson expecting another tough test after the 1-1 draw between the two sides at Field Mill on New Year’s Eve.

“They’ve changed a lot since we last played them, they did a lot of business in January so it will take a good performance from us to beat them,” he added.

“They’re in good form and were unlucky last week, they have more pace throughout their team than anything we’ve faced in a while.

“We want to get promoted as quickly as possible so it will be great if we can do it at home, I want to win the league but firstly we want to secure the promotion, these opportunities have got to be taken.”
