Ferguson's tactical masterclass

9 April 2017

Manager Darren Ferguson believes a change in formation gave his side all three points against Mansfield Town.

Rovers secured promotion to Sky Bet League One after a 74th minute header from Tommy Rowe sent Ferguson men back to the third tier of English football at the first attempt.

“All week we had worked on playing the diamond formation for 10 minutes and then changing to three at the back because we knew it would cause them problems,” he said.

“We worked hard on a system in training, we wanted to play forward in the first half and stop them from pressing us, but once we went to three at the back we had control of the game.

“The clean sheet was vital for us against a very good team, I would not like to play them in the playoffs actually because they have a lot of energy and commitment.”

Darren Ferguson has made it clear to his side that he would like them to go unbeaten until the end of the season but did concede it would be a hard challenge.

“We want to go the remainder of the season unbeaten now, I would like us to go on and win all five of our games but it is going to be very difficult,” he said.

“I don’t have to worry about keeping the lads focused to be honest they are a level-headed bunch, the main focus for us is to go on and win the league, we are determined to show people that we are the best team in this league.”
