Darren Ferguson is hoping Tuesday’s win over Bradford City is the start of a cup run which captures the imagination of the Doncaster public.
Ben Whiteman’s late goal secured a 3-2 win over the Bantams to put Rovers into the second round of the Carabao Cup, and Ferguson is looking to progress further in the competition.
He said: “Bradford are a great example of how a cup run can capture the imagination, we knew it was going to be tough but we felt it was a winnable game.
“We’re in the draw for the next round which is all we can ask for. We have started the season well, we should have won on Saturday and I’ve told the players to take confidence from the two performances so far.”
Whiteman struck with a sweet finish to seal progress, with his first goal since joining the club on loan from Sheffield United.
Ferguson added: “Ben’s produced a magnificent goal. He is really good at that.
“He has a really powerful shot with the side of a foot, and it was right in a bottom corner.”
