Boss has eyes on draw

23 August 2017

Rovers boss Darren Ferguson is looking forward to the third round draw of the Carabao Cup after his side beat Hull City 2-0 to progress.

Second half goals from Alfie May and Tommy Rowe secured passage to the next round of the competition and Ferguson would like a return to the club where he began his footballing career.

“I am delighted, obviously you are in a cup competition and you want to win it, we are into the third round and it has been a long time since I’ve been in it,” he said.

“I do not know who has gone through but I would like a big side away from home, there is no doubt about it, because we might not get the opportunity again.

“I would love to go to Old Trafford and I would like to go to Wembley, I have spoken about this to the players, there are a lot of big opportunities to go to these places if we got in the third round.”

Hull fielded a team which saw six players make their senior debuts for the club, and Ferguson was impressed with the way the youthful side handled themselves in the first half of the fixture.

“It was always going to be a tricky tie for us regardless of the side they put out, we knew that they were going to play a younger side and I felt that the Hull supporters helped them,” he said.

“As the game grew in the first half, they got more and more into it and it was important that we did not get frustrated and lose a goal, so we could get in at half time and address a few things.

“The performances at home this season have been good and we learnt a lot from Saturday’s game against Blackpool, we spoke about if we went ahead to play the ball more in the opposition half and that’s what we did.”
