Coppinger raring to go

4 August 2017

After promotion last season, captain James Coppinger is raring to go against Gillingham on Saturday as Rovers kick off their Sky Bet League One campaign.

Coppinger who is now entering his 14th season with Rovers, believes that after such a great season last year, the squad’s experience of the third tier means that there is no reason why they can not compete for promotion once again this time around.

“We will look to be very successful this year, I want to be the best I can be and I’m sure the players will be the same too, and we should look to get in to the play-offs this year, if not higher,” he said.

“We’ve got a tight knit group and one that was successful last season, we’re looking to build on that this season and hopefully push on, there is some good teams that have been relegated from the Championship and it’ll be tough.

“We are under no illusion that you can’t get in to those play-offs or get promoted, it has been done before and if anyone can do it we can.”

Coppinger is also keen to repay the fans after the last time that Rovers were in League One, and says the team have a few wrongs to right after their previous stint in the third of English football.

“We’re going in to this season full of confidence, we have a lot to prove after the last season in League One, but we’ve shown great character to bounce back to where we believe we should be, if not higher,” he said.

“It is a long season, but it is one that could be another successful one, with the squad and experience we’ve got though in this division means that it’ll be interesting and the first 10 games of the season are massive, but we are going in to the season full of confidence.”
